The Challenge

National Pipe and Plastics — one of the largest PVC pipe manufacturers in the country, shipping roughly 700,000 pounds of product a day — needed their heavy-duty storage and staging lot in Colfax, NC completely rebuilt after decades of wear. The asphalt had gone unmaintained for 30 to 40 years under constant traffic from 70,000-pound tractor-trailers and heavy forklifts stacking and transferring large-diameter pipe. Grading had been patched and built up unevenly over that time, creating drainage problems and a surface that could no longer support the loads it carried. The facility also had to stay fully operational throughout the project — with only one way in and one way out, and active forklift and pipe-stacking traffic running through the same areas Lambeth needed to work, safety coordination was as much a part of the job as the paving itself. What the facility needed wasn't a surface patch — it was a paving contractor capable of rebuilding commercial pavement from the subgrade up without shutting down operations.

The Approach

The crew worked the project in phases to keep National Pipe's operations moving — starting in lower-traffic areas and progressively working back toward sections with heavier daily use, cutting one side of a section out to repave while keeping the other side open for forklift traffic, then flipping. Each section was milled a full eight inches deep to remove decades of failed asphalt and expose stable subgrade, with problem areas undercut and stabilized with fabric where the base couldn't hold on its own. Six inches of binder course went back in for structural strength, followed by a two-inch surface lift engineered to shed water quickly and hold up under repeated heavy-truck and forklift traffic for years to come. Throughout the project, Lambeth's crew coordinated daily with National Pipe's on-site team to sequence work around active pipe loading and forklift movement, keeping both crews safe.

The Result

National Pipe and Plastics now has a fully reconstructed, structurally sound lot built to handle 70,000-pound trucks and constant forklift traffic without the surface failures the old asphalt could no longer resist — with drainage engineered to move water off the property fast instead of pooling and re-damaging the base.
