New construction asphalt paving in Kernersville, NC

Client: Fourth Elm Construction
End Client: Bank OZK
‍Location: 500 East Mountain Street Kernersville, NC 27284
‍Services: New Construction Asphalt Paving, ADA Compliance, Stormwater Drainage Grading
‍Scope: New construction bank facility — two-lift asphalt paving, drive-through, parking lot, and ADA handicap areas
‍Timeline: One-day; completed September 8, 2026

The Challenge

New construction paving on a tight bank lot comes with a set of complications that a standard parking lot rehab doesn't. The site had manholes positioned directly in drive lanes — some had been struck and displaced before Lambeth arrived, requiring them to be reset and stoned in before paving could begin. The lot's compact footprint made equipment maneuvering a constant challenge throughout the job. On top of that, the facility's bio-filtration stormwater system required precise grading on every pass to ensure water moved off the surface and into the underground drainage infrastructure rather than pooling on the lot. With an active construction site still completing electrical, backfill, and curb work around the paving crew, coordination and sequencing were as much a part of the job as the asphalt itself.

The Approach

Lambeth Asphalt tackled the project in two lifts. The first lift — the binder course — established grade, addressed drainage across the full lot including the drive-through and ATM lanes on the back side, and set the ADA handicap areas to within compliance tolerances. Compaction densities hit 92% throughout, confirming the base was performing as required before the surface lift followed.

The foreman pre-measured the entire lot before the paver operator arrived each phase, confirming grades and calling out measurements ahead of the machine so the crew could move without stopping. Where manholes required special handling, the crew cut around them precisely — leaving the machine running around the obstruction rather than stopping the mat. Hot mix came from Sharp Brothers in Greensboro. The second lift completed the surface course once the remaining site construction — electrical, sidewalk backfill, and curb work — was finished.

The Result

Fourth Elm Construction's Bank OZK location in Kernersville came out of the project with a fully paved parking lot and drive-through — properly graded for the bio-stormwater system, ADA-compliant handicap areas set to spec, and a two-lift surface built to handle daily bank traffic for years to come. Completed September 8, 2026.

"These bank lots are tight. You're maneuvering a paver in a space that wasn't really designed with a paving crew in mind. We had manholes to reset, ADA measurements to nail, and a stormwater system that required every grade to be right on the first pass. We got good densities, the water's moving where it needs to go — second lift will finish it off right." — Dock, Lead Foreman

Why It Matters

Fourth Elm Construction is a repeat client — a general contractor that actively sends new construction work to Lambeth Asphalt because the crew can be counted on to work around an active site without creating problems for other trades. On a tight new construction lot where sequencing and grade precision directly affect the finished building's drainage and ADA compliance, the ability to execute without disrupting the broader project timeline is what earns that next referral.
